Tidy My Mac vs Norton for Mac

Norton is the antivirus many people already know from Windows, and its plans cover a Mac too. Here is what Norton AntiVirus Plus and Norton 360 do on a Mac, what they cost after the first year, and how Tidy My Mac compares.

macOS 26 Tahoe or later · No credit card · Everything runs on your Mac

The short answer: Norton is a safe, well-known antivirus with a firewall, Safe Web and an AI scam checker, and one subscription can cover Macs, PCs and phones. Its first-year prices are low, but they roughly double at renewal, and several features on its plan lists, such as Cloud Backup and Parental Control, don't work on a Mac. Its Mac app has a basic file cleanup; a full cleaner is a separate subscription. Tidy My Mac has antivirus, ransomware protection and a per-app firewall too, with cleanup, an uninstaller and app updates included. Choose Norton if you want one plan for several kinds of devices, a VPN, or your Mac runs a macOS older than 26 Tahoe.

What Norton does on a Mac

Norton is made by Gen Digital, the company called NortonLifeLock until it merged with Avast in 2022; Gen also owns Avast and AVG. Every Norton plan installs the same Mac app, with:

  • Antivirus: real-time protection, Quick and Full scans, scans of external drives, and a quarantine.
  • Firewall: Application Blocking lets you allow or block each app's internet access, and Connection Blocking sets rules for network traffic.
  • Safe Web: browser extensions that warn about dangerous and scam sites.
  • Genie Scam Protection: an AI assistant that checks texts, links and websites you aren't sure about.
  • Performance: File Cleanup for app caches, logs, Trash and files left by removed apps, and a Startup Manager.
  • Password Manager, and in Norton 360 plans a VPN and Dark Web Monitoring.

Norton's own system requirements say Cloud Backup, Parental Control and SafeCam are not supported on a Mac, though they appear in the plan lists. Norton sells ransomware protection, but Macworld's review found no active anti-ransomware feature in the Mac app: known ransomware is caught by the antivirus, and there is no rollback of encrypted files.

Norton plans and prices

  • AntiVirus Plus, 1 device: $29.99 the first year, then $59.99 a year. With 5 devices, $39.99, then $84.99.
  • Norton 360 Standard, 3 devices: adds the VPN and Dark Web Monitoring, $39.99 the first year, then $94.99.
  • Norton 360 Deluxe, 5 devices: adds Privacy Monitor, $49.99 the first year, then $124.99.
  • Norton 360 with LifeLock: adds identity theft protection, in the US.

Plans renew automatically, Norton bills up to 35 days before the renewal date, and its terms say renewal prices may change. Yearly plans have a 60-day money-back guarantee. The free trial needs a payment method and turns into a paid plan unless you cancel. Norton Utilities Ultimate, the full cleaner with an uninstaller, duplicate finder and photo cleaner, is a separate subscription at $49.99 the first year, then $69.99. Tidy My Mac is $19.99 for the first year and $59.99 a year after that, for one Mac, with every feature included and a 7-day trial that needs no card.

Is Norton safe and worth it for a Mac?

Norton is safe: it is one of the oldest security brands, and its app is notarized by Apple. Download it only from norton.com, because fake Norton invoices and pop-ups are a common scam, like the fake Apple security alert. Whether it is worth it depends on how many devices you protect. For a home with Windows PCs and phones, one Norton 360 plan is convenient. For a single Mac, you pay $59.99 a year from the second year for an antivirus without cleanup, and in Macworld's 2025 tests Safe Web let some scam sites through, most of all in Edge.

Where they are the same

Both have real-time antivirus with scans on demand, a per-app firewall, blocking of phishing and malware sites, a scam message checker, a cache and log cleaner, and control over the apps that start with your Mac.

Where Tidy My Mac does more

  • Ransomware protection that watches for files being encrypted and uses decoy files, rather than relying on known ransomware.
  • Cleanup and apps in the same plan: a disk map, large and old files, duplicates and similar photos, an uninstaller, and app updates with alerts for apps with known vulnerabilities.
  • Web Protection works in every browser and app, Safari included, and blocks ads and trackers, not only through an extension.
  • Checks of your macOS security settings, camera and microphone access, and browser extensions.
  • One price from the second year on, published on this site, with no upsells to other products.

Where Norton does more

  • Other devices: plans for 3, 5 or 10 devices, mixing Macs, Windows PCs, Android phones and iPhones.
  • A VPN, a password manager and Dark Web Monitoring in Norton 360, and identity theft protection with LifeLock.
  • Real-time protection runs in the background all the time. Tidy My Mac's watches new files in Downloads and Desktop while the app is open, and catches up on the rest when it opens again.
  • The Virus Protection Promise: if Norton's experts can't remove a virus, you get a refund, as long as your plan renews automatically.
  • It runs on macOS 10.13 High Sierra and later, by Norton's own requirements; Tidy My Mac needs macOS 26 Tahoe.

Can you use Norton and Tidy My Mac together?

Yes, but not both with real-time protection and the firewall on. Two real-time scanners check every new file twice, and two firewalls make blocked connections hard to trace. If you keep Norton for protection, use Tidy My Mac for cleanup and apps and turn off its Real-time protection and Firewall.

How to uninstall Norton on a Mac

  1. Turn off automatic renewal in your Norton account first, so the plan doesn't renew after you remove the app.
  2. Quit Norton, open Applications in the Finder, and drag the Norton app to the Trash, or open Norton Uninstaller if your version has one.
  3. Allow the removal of its system extension when macOS asks, enter your administrator password, and restart your Mac. Remove the Safe Web extension from your browsers too. Tidy My Mac's Uninstaller finds an app's helpers and leftover files in one step.

Prices and features were checked on Norton's own website and support pages on October 30, 2026; the notes on ransomware and Safe Web come from Macworld's review. We make Tidy My Mac, so read this page with that in mind. See the full comparison for Malwarebytes, Bitdefender, Intego and the other apps.

Questions about Norton

It is a solid antivirus with a firewall and scam protection, and convenient if you also protect Windows PCs and phones. On a Mac it has fewer features than on Windows: no Cloud Backup, no Parental Control on the Mac itself, and only a basic file cleanup.

Norton AntiVirus Plus is $29.99 for the first year for one device, then $59.99 a year. Norton 360 Standard, for 3 devices, is $39.99, then $94.99, and Deluxe, for 5 devices, is $49.99, then $124.99.

Usually not noticeably. Real-time protection checks new files, and a Full scan uses the processor while it runs. Avoid running Norton alongside another real-time antivirus.

No. Tidy My Mac has real-time antivirus, ransomware protection, a firewall and Web Protection of its own. Norton makes sense if you want one subscription for Windows PCs and phones as well, or a VPN.
