Tidy My Mac vs Malwarebytes for Mac
Malwarebytes is one of the best-known malware removers for the Mac, and many people install it the moment something looks wrong. Here is what it does on a Mac, what the free version leaves out, what it costs, and how Tidy My Mac compares.
macOS 26 Tahoe or later · No credit card · Everything runs on your Mac
The short answer: Malwarebytes is a safe, well-regarded antivirus for the Mac, and its free scanner is a good way to check a Mac you're worried about. It doesn't clean up your disk, remove apps or update them, and its Mac app has no firewall. Tidy My Mac has the same kind of protection, real-time antivirus, ransomware protection and blocking of bad sites, together with cleanup, an uninstaller, app updates and an outgoing firewall. Choose Malwarebytes if you want one subscription for a Mac, a Windows PC and phones, or your Mac runs a macOS older than 26 Tahoe.

What Malwarebytes does on a Mac
Malwarebytes started on Windows in 2008. Its Mac app grew out of AdwareMedic, a free adware remover by Thomas Reed that Malwarebytes bought in 2014, which is why it is especially good at adware and browser hijackers. Today's Malwarebytes for Mac has:
- real-time protection against malware, ransomware, adware and unwanted apps, which quarantines what it finds;
- a scan on demand, which can take as little as 30 seconds;
- web protection that blocks malicious and scam sites, and Browser Guard, a free browser extension that also blocks ads and trackers;
- Scam Guard, which checks messages and links you aren't sure about;
- a VPN and identity theft protection in the more expensive plans.
Is Malwarebytes safe for Mac?
Yes. Malwarebytes is a long-established security company, its Mac app is notarized by Apple, and its researchers publish much of what is known about new Mac malware. Download it only from malwarebytes.com: fake installers of well-known apps, security apps included, are a common way of spreading malware. It needs Full Disk Access to scan your whole Mac, which is normal for any antivirus.
Is Malwarebytes for Mac free?
Partly. The download starts as a 14-day trial of the paid version. When the trial ends, it becomes a free scanner: you can still run a scan by hand and remove what it finds, but real-time protection and scheduled scans stop. That is fine for checking a Mac now and then, but it won't stop malware before it runs. To clean a Mac by hand, see how to remove malware from a Mac.
What Malwarebytes costs
- Standard, 1 device: $44.99 a year. The pricing page says its discounts are for the first year only and doesn't show the renewal price.
- Standard, 3 devices: $59.99 a year, for any mix of Macs, Windows PCs and phones.
- Plus, 3 devices: $79.98 a year, with the VPN. Total adds identity theft protection for $89.99 in the first year.
Every plan has a 60-day money-back guarantee. Tidy My Mac is $19.99 for the first year and $59.99 a year after that, for one Mac, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.
Where they are the same
Both have real-time antivirus with scans on demand, ransomware protection, adware and browser hijacker removal, blocking of phishing and malware sites, a scam message checker, and advice on your security settings.
Where Tidy My Mac does more
- Cleanup: a junk cleaner, a disk map, large and old files, duplicates and similar photos. Malwarebytes doesn't clean up your disk at all.
- Apps: an uninstaller that removes leftovers, app updates with alerts for apps with known vulnerabilities, and every startup item with the app it belongs to.
- A per-app outgoing firewall; see why the built-in one doesn't block apps.
- Web Protection blocks ads and trackers in every browser and app, not only through a browser extension.
- Checks for camera and microphone access, browser extensions and Wi-Fi, and a performance monitor.
Where Malwarebytes does more
- Other devices: one subscription covers Macs, Windows PCs, Android phones and iPhones.
- A free scanner that keeps working after the trial.
- A VPN and identity theft protection in its bigger plans.
- It runs on macOS 11 Big Sur and later; Tidy My Mac needs macOS 26 Tahoe.
- Real-time protection runs in the background all the time. Tidy My Mac's watches new files in Downloads and Desktop while the app is open, and catches up on the rest when it opens again.
Can you use Malwarebytes and Tidy My Mac together?
Yes, but not both with real-time protection on. Two real-time scanners check every new file twice and can slow each other down. If you keep Malwarebytes for protection, use Tidy My Mac for cleanup and apps and turn off its Real-time protection; or keep Malwarebytes' free scanner for a second opinion now and then.
How to uninstall Malwarebytes on a Mac
- If you have a subscription you no longer want, cancel it in your Malwarebytes account, so it doesn't renew.
- Open Malwarebytes, choose Help › Uninstall Malwarebytes in the menu bar, and enter your password. This removes its background helpers too.
- Remove the Browser Guard extension from your browsers if you added it. Tidy My Mac's Uninstaller also finds and removes an app with its helpers and leftover files in one step.
Prices and features were checked on Malwarebytes' own website and help center on October 29, 2026. We make Tidy My Mac, so read this page with that in mind. See the full comparison for Bitdefender, Norton, Intego and the other apps.
Questions about Malwarebytes
Yes. It is a well-regarded antivirus that is especially good at adware and browser hijackers. It doesn't clean up your disk, remove apps or include a firewall on the Mac.
For checking a Mac now and then, yes: it scans and removes malware when you run it. It has no real-time protection, so it won't stop malware or a stealer before it runs.
Usually not noticeably. Real-time protection checks new files as they arrive, and a full scan uses the processor while it runs. Avoid running two real-time antivirus apps at once.
No. Tidy My Mac has real-time antivirus, ransomware protection and Web Protection of its own. Malwarebytes makes sense if you also want to protect Windows PCs or phones under one subscription.
