Mac privacy permissions: camera, microphone, Full Disk Access and more
Apps on a Mac have to ask before they use your camera, microphone, screen or files. Here is how to allow an app that needs access, which permissions deserve a second look, and how to take access back.
macOS 26 Tahoe ou posterior · Sem cartão de crédito · Tudo roda no seu Mac
The short answer: open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click a permission, such as Camera or Full Disk Access. Turn the switch next to an app on to allow it, or off to take access back; for Full Disk Access, use + to add an app that isn't listed. Then quit and reopen the app. Look through Accessibility, Full Disk Access and Screen & System Audio Recording now and then: they give an app the most power.
How to allow camera or microphone access on a Mac
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Camera (or Microphone).
- Turn on the switch next to the app, such as Zoom, Teams or your browser.
- Quit the app completely and open it again. Most apps only check the permission when they start.
If the app isn't in the list, it hasn't asked yet: start a call or a recording in it, and macOS shows the request. If you once clicked Don't Allow and the app no longer asks, turn it on in the list, or reset its answers in Terminal with tccutil reset Camera followed by the app's bundle ID, such as us.zoom.xos.
In a browser, each website asks separately. In Safari, choose Safari › Settings › Websites and click Camera or Microphone; in Chrome, click the icon to the left of the address. The browser itself still needs the macOS permission above.
What Full Disk Access is, and how to grant it
Full Disk Access lets an app read the parts of your Mac that macOS protects even from apps you run: Mail and Messages data, Safari history, Time Machine settings and other apps' containers. Backup apps, antivirus and cleanup apps need it to see everything; most other apps don't.
- Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Full Disk Access.
- Turn on the app's switch. If it isn't listed, click +, enter your password, choose the app in Applications and click Open.
- Quit and reopen the app; macOS may offer to do it for you.
Grant it only to apps you trust and that explain why they need it. An app with Full Disk Access can read almost all of your data.
The permissions that matter most
| Permissão | What an app can do with it |
|---|---|
| Acessibilidade | Control your Mac: click, type and read what is on screen in other apps. Needed by window managers and automation tools; also a favourite of malware. |
| Acesso Total ao Disco | Read nearly every file, including mail, messages and browser history. |
| Gravação de Tela e Áudio do Sistema | See and record everything on your screen and the sound your Mac plays. |
| Monitoramento de Entrada | Read every key you press, in every app. |
| Camera, Microphone | See and hear you while the app is running. |
| Files & Folders, Photos, Contacts, Calendars | Read the files or data in that place only. |
An app you don't recognise in Accessibility, Input Monitoring or Screen Recording, especially one you didn't knowingly allow, is worth investigating before anything else.
How to see when an app uses the camera or microphone
macOS shows a coloured dot in the menu bar while an app uses them: green for the camera, orange for the microphone. Open Control Center to see which app it is. A menu bar icon also appears while an app records your screen.
How to remove an app's access
Turn off the app's switch in the same list, or select it and click − where there is one. Uninstalling an app doesn't always remove it from these lists; an entry for an app that is gone does nothing and can be removed. To start over for one app, run tccutil reset All followed by its bundle ID in Terminal, and it will ask again for each permission.
Review permissions with Tidy My Mac
- Privacy Access lists every app you allowed to use your camera, microphone, screen, files, contacts and the other permissions, on one screen, and alerts you live when an app starts using the camera or microphone.
- Security Settings checks FileVault, Gatekeeper, the firewall and System Integrity Protection, and scores your Mac out of 100.
- Browser Extensions shows which extensions can read every website you visit, the permission browsers manage themselves.
Dúvidas sobre privacy permissions
For the camera and microphone, the app appears once it has asked; use the feature that needs it. For Full Disk Access, apps don't ask: add the app yourself with the + button.
For an app you trust that needs it, such as a backup, antivirus or cleanup app, yes. Don't grant it to apps that don't explain why, since it lets them read nearly all your data.
Quit and reopen the app, check that no other app is using the camera, and in a browser check the website's own camera setting. If it still fails, restart the Mac.
On Macs with a built-in camera, the green light is wired to the camera, so it always shows when the camera is on. Check the permission list if you see it when you don't expect it.
